Darrell Wood

Founder & CEO

In February 2013, at the tender age of 18, Darrell faced a daunting challenge: a diagnosis of testicular cancer. Rather than succumbing to fear, he embraced the fight with unwavering determination. Supported by his loving family and the tight-knit theater community, Darrell underwent surgery and chemotherapy at The Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters. His strength prevailed, and after two rounds of treatment, he entered remission.

Darrell’s journey wasn’t over yet. In October 2013, during his freshman year at Virginia Wesleyan University, he faced another hurdle: a nine-hour surgery to remove 36 abdominal lymph nodes. Emerging with 34 staples and an indomitable spirit, Darrell was declared cancer-free. This experience became the catalyst for a remarkable mission.

Inspired by the overwhelming support he received from theaters nationwide through the #cuesforDarrell campaign, Darrell planted the seeds for “Cues for Cancer,” an organization dedicated to supporting others facing similar battles. When a fellow actor friend was diagnosed with the same cancer, Darrell knew it was time to turn his vision into reality.

But Darrell’s story is far more than his battle with cancer. It’s a testament to the power of passion and perseverance. Since graduating college in 2022, he has flourished in both his professional career and his artistic pursuits. Darrell’s talent shines on stage, having performed in numerous productions including “Vanya, Sonia, Masha, and Spike,” “A Chorus Line,” and “Mamma Mia.” His 15-year dance journey has taken him from local productions to prestigious performances like “The Nutcracker.”

Darrell’s musical prowess extends beyond the stage. Mentored by the acclaimed Dr. Michael John Trotta, he has lent his voice to various choral ensembles and even graced the hallowed halls of Carnegie Hall twice. His recording work, particularly with “Mystical Voices,” showcases his versatility as a performer.

Family remains at the heart of Darrell’s story. His two brothers, including one who has overcome testicular cancer three times, serve as a constant source of inspiration and support. Darrell views his scars not as blemishes, but as powerful symbols of his journey and unique place in the world.

Today, Darrell stands as a beacon of hope and resilience. His life is a vibrant tapestry woven with threads of artistry, advocacy, and triumph over adversity. Through “Cues for Cancer” and his continued passion for the performing arts, Darrell proves that with determination and support, one can not only survive but thrive in the face of life’s greatest challenges.
